Month of Love

couple kissing outside with a park bench

On a recent out-of-town trip, I met a new friend who was completely befuddled by her mother’s addiction to romance paperbacks. “I just don’t get it,” she confided, “my mother is an educated woman! Why is she reading this trash?”

Friends, it’s the month of love, and as your neighborhood librarian, I am telling you that romance novels are NOT trash.

Best of Kanopy: Horror Flicks

Hey, I’ve got a proposition I would like you to consider. Instead of doing the whole Valentine’s Day business this year, what if you completely ignored the customary hubbub of the holiday and stayed in to get completely unnerved with some good old-fashioned horror cinema? Surely, I’m not the first person to propose such a venture? To sweeten the pot, I have even gone to the trouble of curating a handful of titles to help you pull off this feat.

Best of hoopla: Oscar-Nominated Film Scores

There are a million reasons to love hoopla. Using only your library card and an internet connection you can access a massive collection of e-books, audiobooks, movies, and music. Better yet, you never have to wait on hoopla items because they are always available. What’s even more impressive is that the curators at hoopla are constantly updating their digital library with the latest releases. In January the Academy Award nominees were announced and I always look forward to hearing the nominees for “Best Music (Original Score),” so I was elated to find that hoopla already had all five of the nominees available to check out!

Best of hoopla: Television

hoopla image - couple sitting on sofa watching tv

In my new obsession with streaming television shows I’ve discovered that Hoopla helps to fulfill that obsessive need! And I’m not talking about that fleeting kind of obsession that normally happens to me when I’m shopping at Target and I come across an item that I saw on late night TV and had to have, I mean who doesn’t want a “Flippin’ Fantastic” that makes 7 perfectly shaped pancakes at once?!?

Best of hoopla: Comics

If you don’t have a particular title or author in mind, try browsing some of the fun categories such as “happier family road trips,” “best of hoopla 2017,” or “celebrity readers.”

Best of hoopla: Movies

This is the time of year when I go into movie-watching high gear. At any other time of year, I can watch whatever strikes my fancy, be it studio blockbuster or weird indie film. But between December and March, I’ve got to get as many of the major award nominees watched as possible before the telecasts of the awards ceremonies, so I can feel cultured while I critique everyone’s outfits and speeches. It’s tradition.

Fantasy Kingdoms

Gandolf the Grey lego

It was recently announced that there will be a prequel TV series for the Lord of the Rings. Some people are saying that this is going to be the next cult TV sensation. We all know that Tolkien helped pioneer the fantasy genre, but when it comes to TV, Game of Thrones is the original. With the final season airing in 2019 and then spin-off series already in the works, it is highly unlikely anyone can compete with the juggernaut that is Game of Thrones. What do you think? Is the Lord of the Rings fandom big enough to make the new series an instant success or do you think that Game of Thrones is unstoppable? No matter which side you fall on, we all have a long wait before either show puts out new content.

Readers Gonna Read

Practically all my life, I’ve carried a book with me at all times. I read everywhere. I scoff at people who say they “don’t have time to read.” Oh yeah? What do you do in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, in line at the supermarket, on breaks at work, and at stoplights? For the true reader, there is ALWAYS time to read.

Making a Murderino

stay sexy don't get murdered - Making a Murderino

When I was eleven, we took a family road trip to Los Angeles. I remember many things about that trip—my drawings of the ever-changing landscape out the car window, seeing my first drag queen on Hollywood Boulevard, my dad bribing me with polished rocks (which I collected at the time) to go through the Hall of Horrors at the wax museum, my weird guilt over not loving my stuffed animal from Disneyland as much as I loved my stuffed animal from Universal Studios—but perhaps the thing I remember most vividly is reading a magazine in our hotel room.

Greetings, parents and caregivers of young children! Autumn in Oklahoma is finally here. Finally. Sadly, our favorite time of the year has been sullied by a near-constant barrage of colds. The twins are currently fighting off hacking and shnortling. My 8-year-old is fighting off post- and pre- (the grossest kind) nasal drips. Superwife is battling an epic wheeze and a record-setting intracranial clog. Yours truly? I've got a nasty headache, a bone-rattling sneeze, gloopy eyes, and a weird brain fog. Though, honestly, the brain fog is pretty normal for me.

Stranger Things

Someone recently asked me this: "If you could choose any category to play in Jeopardy, what would it be?" My immediate answer: "80s pop culture, please!" To me, the 80s were a wonderful and awkward decade of perms, mullets, "mom jeans," and wood paneling, alongside some of the best films, books, music, and art.
