Hello, hoopla

Metropolitan Library System is happy to bring you hoopla!

So, what’s hoopla?

Hoopla is a groundbreaking digital media service that allows you to borrow movies, music, eAudiobooks, eBooks, comics and TV shows to enjoy on your computer, tablet, or phone – and even your TV! With no waiting, titles can be streamed immediately, or downloaded to phones or tablets for offline enjoyment. You can enjoy hoopla anytime, anywhere. Absolutely no waiting or placing holds!

How does it work?

Hoopla is available for streaming via the web (TV, movies) or downloading/streaming (eBooks, eAudio, comics) through the hoopla app. Here is the list of supported Android, Amazon & Apple devices. Visit the website and/or download the app then login using your library card number and pin, which is your last name. Don’t have a library card? Get one here.

Once you’ve entered your library card information and last name, you will need to create a hoopla account using an email address. Don’t have an email address? You can sign up for one online using sites like Gmail or Yahoo. Once you’ve set up an email address, you can use it to login to hoopla.

Caregivers, there’s an option in the settings which allows you to limit content by age appropriateness.

Is there a checkout limit?

Yes, there is. Currently, we are offering 6 checkouts per month. You can use your checkouts for any of hoopla’s great content: tv, movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, and comics. If you use your 6 checkouts and still need something to read, we recommend trying local indie authors, or Overdrive Comics, eBooks and eAudiobooks. If you’re looking for more music, check out Freegal, which has millions of songs you can download legally for free.

How long can I enjoy hoopla items?

With hoopla, every content type has a different lending period. Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Movies: 72 hours
  • TV Series: 72 hours
  • Music Albums: 7 days
  • eAudiobooks: 21 days
  • eBooks: 21 days
  • Comics: 21 days

For eBooks and eAudio Books, What's the difference between hoopla and Overdrive?

   Anonymous,       Monday, August 14, 2017,      ,

The biggest different between our hoopla collection and our OverDrive collection is that all hoopla titles are always available, i.e. there's no waiting list! If you see a title in our OverDrive collection that has a wait list, check Hoopla to see if we have a copy. If we do and if you haven't maxed out your monthly limit of 4 checkouts, then you can check it out at that time.

What is the pin number for the Metropolitan Library System used to access Hoopla?

   Hunter Strohl,       Tuesday, August 15, 2017,      ,

Hi Hunter, When creating your hoopla account, your pin number is your last name.

When I tried to create an account it wanted me to select my closest library from a list that wasn't close at all (Tulsa & Southeastern Oklahoma instead of OKC). Is Hoopla not available in the Oklahoma City metro area yet?

   Sue,       Thursday, August 17, 2017,      ,

Hi Sue,
Search for & then choose Metropolitan Library System. That's how our subscription is listed, not under OKC. Enjoy!

If I download an item on my tablet, can I listen or watch it on my phone if my tablet is not available?

   Linda Williams,       Thursday, August 31, 2017,      ,

Hi Linda,
Yes, you should be able to watch/listen to the same item on multiple devices as long as you aren't trying to watch/listen simultaneously on multiple devices.

How do you access the offerings on tv?

   Marie,       Tuesday, September 05, 2017,      ,

Hi Marie,

Currently, there are two supported ways to watch hoopla videos on your TV. Both Android and iOS users are able to cast videos to their Chromecast (Gen 1 and Gen 2 only. Chromecast Ultra support coming soon), and iOS users can take advantage of their Apple TV via AirPlay. Hope that helps!

I have downloaded the app but it isn't on my app screen. How do I access it?

   Linda Balsiger ,       Sunday, September 24, 2017,      ,

Hi Linda,
I'm so sorry we're so late in responding to your comment but you might scroll across your screens to see if it placed the app on another screen, i.e. put your thumb on the right side of your screen & swipe left, or if you're using an Android device, open your Android app drawer: http://www.beginandroid.com/appdrawer.shtml. If you need any more help, please let us know: www.metrolibrary.org/askalibrarian.
