What about Me?
Love is in the air! Whatever your little heart needs this month, you can find it at the library. Nothing against the typical "girl meets boy" book, but what if you’re looking for something different? Let’s go through the imaginary mailbag and answer some real questions that I really made up.
Signs of Attraction by Laura Brown
Dear library lady, I am a straight female college student who is hard of hearing. Most people don’t know that about me -- I’ve worked so hard my whole life to hide it! But now I’ve met an insanely hot guy who is deaf. He’s perfect, and I think I could fall for him. But what will this mean for me? After years of passing as someone without a hearing impairment, I’m worried that a relationship with this man will out me and blow up my life. I’ve always thought I was broken, but maybe I’m fine? All I know is, he looks at me and I just melt. Can you help me out with a book recommendation?
Blank Spaces by Cass Lennox
Dear library lady, I am an asexual gay man who is done with dating. I couldn’t find a man who just wanted a romance without getting physical, so I gave up. I threw myself into my work at the art gallery instead. But now paintings are being stolen, and the insurance investigator looking into the thefts is a very interesting man. He’s the complete opposite of asexual, but he seems to really like me for who I am. I like him too! I feel a romantic spark, and I’m struggling. Is there any hope for a relationship between us? And what might that look like? Do you have a book for me?
Paper Collage Chinese Style by Chenbo Wang
Hey library lady, I hate to rain on everyone’s parade, but I just don’t care this year. I’m at the point where I want to crumple every valentine I see and rip it to shreds!!! Got anything for me? Bet you don’t, pfft.
Bet I do! This art form is all about treating paper with extreme prejudice. Use your bare hands, paper, and glue to turn those annoying valentines into creative, beautiful things – flowers, birds, portraits, anything you like. It’s not a tantrum if you’re crafting.
Country Music Hair by Erin Duvall
Library lady, darlin’, I want to go to Graham’s and partner up with a cowboy or two, but I can’t decide how to wear my hair! Don’t tell me to wear a hat, neither. I do the Electric Slide pretty hard, and hats just fall right off. I know how to fix hair, that ain’t my problem. I just want to look at some pictures for inspiration. Do y’all have anythang to help a lady out?
Cat Castles: 20 Cardboard Habitats You Can Build Yourself by Carin Oliver
Dear library lady…. I give up. I’m just done, finished, no love for me ever. It’s fine. Really, I’m fine… it looks like it’s just me and my cats from here on out. But I still want to celebrate Valentine’s day with my kitties. They’ve always been here for me. How can I show my love on a tight budget?
Cake Magic! Mix & Match Your Way to 100 Amazing Combinations by Caroline Wright
Dear library lady, I don’t quite know how to say this, but I feel fine, my love life is great, I have no problems to speak of – I just want some cake. Is that ok? What’s your favorite cake book right now?
Trish Trash: Rollergirl of Mars vol. 1 by Jessica Abel
Dear library lady, I love roller derby! And science fiction! And girl power! And art! And jokes! And a good coming-of-age story that explores themes of race, class, and following your dreams even if it disappoints your family! So I guess I need a whole stack of books, right? Or do you have a book with all that stuff??
That’s it for this month, folks. If you’ve enjoyed these imaginary questions, feel free to send us your own real questions! Tailored Titles is happening live on the MLS Facebook page every Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm, or use Ask a Librarian 24/7.
