Public Domain eBooks

Public Domain eBooks are titles no longer covered by copyright protection and can be used without restrictions required for other eBooks.

  • The collection contains more than 15,000 titles.
  • Downloads do NOT require library card authentication.
  • Downloads do NOT count against eMedia checkout limit.
  • Titles are always available, offering unlimited simultaneous access.
  • They do not have specific lending periods, because they do not expire.
  • Uses Adobe Digital Editions, the same software currently use for OverDrive eBooks.

The steps below will walk you through the entire process of enjoying the new Public Domain eBook Collection. If you have already set up your eReader and Adobe Digital Editions, feel free to skip down to Step 3 for specific information on downloading Public Domain eBooks.

Install Software

Our eMedia service requires special software called Adobe® Digital Editions to view and manage eBook titles. Adobe® Digital Editions also allows customers to transfer eBooks from a personal computer to eReader devices. You can also organize your eBooks into a custom library and annotate pages. Authorize Software

  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions
    The Setup Assistant dialog box is displayed.
  2. Click Continue
    The Activation screen is displayed.
  3. Under Authorize Computer, enter the email address & password for your Adobe ID.
    If you do not have an Adobe ID, click get an Adobe ID online.
    • Follow the instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID.
    • Return to the Activation screen.
    • Enter the email address and password for your Adobe account.
  4. Click Activate.
  5. Click Finish to close the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box.

To prevent authorization errors, we recommend using the same email address for registering your device and setting up your Adobe ID. Example, If you registered your Barnes & Noble Nook with the email address nook@address.com, your Adobe ID should be: nook@address.com.

 

Visit Our eMedia Site

  1. Visit our eMedia Site
  2. On the left-side navigation, mouse hover on eCollections
  3. When the side-menu displays, click on the Public Domain eBooks
  4. Browse through subjects or use the built in search to find a Public Domain eBook
  5. To read more information about a particular book, mouse hover on the thumbnail of the book for book information.
  6. Click the Download button under the desired title and click Open.
    Adobe Digital Editions should automatically open.

 

Transfer to Your eReader

  1. Connect the eReader to computer. If applicable, follow the prompts to authorize device. When complete, a link for the connected eReader should display under Bookshelves in Library View.
  2. Drag and Drop the eBook to the eReader (under Bookshelves).
  3. When the transfer is complete, safely disconnect the eReader and enjoy!
