Attention Kindle Users:

We are proud to announce Kindle compatibility with our eMedia Service. Here is some basic information on how Kindle eBooks work with our eMedia system and answers to commonly asked questions.

How does it work?

  1. First, you will visit our eMedia site and find an eBook that is available for check out.
  2. You will click add to eCart next to Kindle book, not add to eCart next to Adobe EPUB eBook.
    1. If you see an eBook with the option Kindle Book and add to eCart it means the title is available for immediate checkout.
    2. However, if you see Kindle eBook place an eReserve the copies for this book are currently checked out.  Feel free to place an eReserve and our system will alert you to when your title is available.
  3. After you have selected the proper format, you will then see your "My eCart" section.
  4. Once you’re ready, click Proceed to Checkout
  5. If applicable, our system will alert you to sign in with your library card and password.
  6. Select your lending period either 7 or 14 days
  7. Push the Confirm Checkout button
  8. Click the Get for Kindle button
  9. You will then be redirected to the Amazon website and a screen with a summary of the eBook you checked out will show up.
  10. Once you’re ready to sync or download to your Kindle, click the  Get library book button
  11. At this time, Amazon may ask you for your Amazon account information.  Please enter the login information you used to register your Kindle on their system.
  12. After you have signed in, you will see the "Deliver To" section.  Select which Kindle device or app you wish to send your eBook to.
  13. Then, click the Continue button.
  14. If your Kindle is connected to WiFi your eBook will show up on your Kindle homescreen.
  15. If your Kindle is not connected to WiFi, you can click the Download now button.
    1. When the pop-up menu appears, select Save.  This will save your Kindle Edition eBook to the default downloads location of your computer.
    2. To begin reading, first make sure your Kindle is connected to this computer via USB. Then, copy the downloaded file to the "documents" folder of your Kindle. It will appear on your Home screen.
  16. Read and enjoy!

Do I need an Amazon account?

Yes, you will need access to the Amazon account that you registered your Kindle with.  You will also need the password you set up for your Amazon account.

Does my Kindle need to be registered?

Yes, in order for Kindle Library Lending to work through our eMedia program, you will need a registered Kindle with an active Amazon account.

Will there be multiple copies available to check out Kindle eBooks?

The number of copies available will vary from one title to another depending upon the amount of customer interest and demand. Currently, our system uses the one copy, one user model. It’s very similar to how our physical collections work. We have a certain number of copies available at any given time for our library customers. We can only physically checkout copies that are not already checked out by or on hold for another customer.

When you are downloading an eBook from our system, you get the option of which format you wish to receive it in. From there it will check out one copy of the available copies of the eBook. If all copies of the eBook title are checked out, you can place a reserve. Library staff will monitor the number of check-outs and reserves for titles and will purchase additional copies to meet demand.

Will I be charged for using Kindle Library Lending?

No, you will not be charged for borrowing Kindle eBooks from our eMedia service.  We would like to caution you that there is an option to purchase the eBook on the Amazon site that is not tied with your checkout in case you wish to purchase after borrowing it from the library.

Will I be notified before my library eBook loan expires?

Yes. Three days before the end of the loan period, Amazon will send a courtesy reminder e-mail about the loan expiration. Once the loan period has ended, an additional e-mail notification will be sent.

How do I view the status of my loan?

You can view the status of your Kindle eBook from the Manage Your Kindle page on the Amazon.com website. Click on the "+" symbol next to any title to view more details about any book that you've borrowed including the expiration date. You can also access all of the materials that you currently have checked out.

What happens to my notes and highlights after a loan expires?

You can always access your notes and highlights through kindle.amazon.com, even after a book expires. And if you check a book out again, or purchase it from Amazon.com all of your notes and highlights will appear in the book as before the loan expired.

What Kindle devices can I read Library Kindle eBooks on?

You can read borrowed Kindle eBooks on any generation Kindle device or all free Kindle apps, as well as in your web browser with Kindle Cloud Reader. Kindle Library Lending eBooks require an active Wi-Fi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device.

eBooks will not be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection. If trying to send to a Kindle device and do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, you may instead choose to load your library book via USB.
