Card Holder Responsibilities

  1. The person signing the card agrees to abide by library system policies and accepts responsibility for fines or other charges resulting from the card’s use.
  2. The card is to be used only by the person signing it.
    1. Exception: The signing parent may use his/her child’s card to borrow materials for that child.
  3. The card is valid at all MLS agencies. It is the property of the library system and must be returned upon request.
  4. Responsibility for the choice of materials borrowed rests with the person who signed the card and not with the Metropolitan Library Commission, the library system or its employees.
  5. Persons who lose their library card or change address should notify the library system promptly.
  6. The customer will be charged a non-refundable $1.00 replacement card fee for lost or stolen cards.
  7. The ability to use a library card will be suspended once a card accrues $25 in fines/fees and will not be reinstated until the balance is paid down below $25.
Fine Structure
  • Overdue Fines
    • $0.10 per day with a maximum of $3.00 per item
    • Electronic devices: $5.00 per hour to a maximum of $60
    • Interlibrary loans (borrowed by MLS): $0.50 per day up to the cost of the item
  • Damaged Book, Magazine or Electronic Device – List price at the time of purchase
  • Damaged Audiovisual Materials – Replacement cost if lost or damaged due to carelessness or neglect
  • Damaged Audiovisual Materials, One Part of a Set (book on CD) – $7.00 per part if lost or damaged due to carelessness or neglect
  • Damaged Audiovisual Materials, Liner Notes or Guide – No charge
  • Lost or damaged materials borrowed by MLS via Interlibrary Loan – The lending library sets the fee
Other Fees
  • Photocopies - $0.10 per page
  • Microfiche Copies - $0.25 per page
  • Computer Prints, Black and White - $0.10 per page
  • Computer Prints, Color - $0.50 per page
