Free Comic Book Day Celebrated At Downtown and Edmond Libraries

Life's great lessons can be learned in early May at two Metropolitan Library System locations as they celebrate Free Comic Book Day.

Join the staff at the RJN Downtown Library as they welcome Oklahoma City 's comic book guru Rob Vollmar, from Atomik Pop, as he chats with comics fans, young and old. Rob will be at the Downtown Library on Thursday, May 4 th from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Edmond Library is working with Atomic Comics and the Comedy Commandos on Saturday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"As a self-admitted lasped comic book geek," said Downtown librarian Kim Edwards, "with well over 700 (more like 1,000) comic books sitting in boxes in my garage, I would like to think I know a little about comics, but what I know could fit on the head of a very tiny pin compared to the knowledge of Atomik Pop's Rob Vollmar.

"Rob will be on hand also to lead a discussion of the classic Miyazaki anime film 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind,' as well as on the source material for 'Nausica'."

At Edmond Library, the comic books will be furnished by Atomic Comics, which is located on Western in Oklahoma City.

"Our Comedy Commandos will also be actively participating-by dressing up as their own unique superheroes and giving out comics in the library," said Edmond librarian Ronna Davis. "In addition they will be presenting a short show. All comics will be family friendly and heavy on the superheroes."

The Comedy Commandos is a teen improvisational comedy group, headquartered at the Edmond Library.

All this is in honor of the fifth National Free Comic Book Day.

Why comic books? They are an original American art form. Besides, they're fun.

Now, about those life lessons. 1. Green rocks from the planet Krypton can be hazardous to your health. 2. Bites from radioactive spiders take a little getting used to. 3. Criminals are a superstitious lot who are afraid of bats.
