Choctaw Library Guild Awards 2006 Scholarship
The Choctaw Library Guild, Inc. is pleased to announce that the recipient of its first scholarship is Lisa Wood of The Village Library. Wood, formerly of the Choctaw Library, is scheduled to graduate from the University of Oklahoma in the Spring of 2007 with a Masters Degree in Library and Information Studies.
Formal announcement of the awarding of The Choctaw Library Guild, Inc. Berniece M. Young Scholarship will be made at the Library Guild's meeting at the Choctaw Library, 2525 Muzzy Street in Choctaw, on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m. Wood will be recognized at that time.
Margaret Mueller, President of The Choctaw Library Guild, said that the $1,000 scholarship is named for the late Berniece M. Young, whose gift of funds to The Guild made this award possible. This is the first year the scholarship has been offered, but plans are to make this an annual scholarship opportunity.
"The scholarship," Mueller added, "will go to somebody doing post-graduate work and has a background in library science or business. We will consider applicants who live in central Oklahoma first, and we were fortunate that Lisa fit the requirements perfectly for our first scholarship."
Wood is specializing in services geared toward youth and plans to remain with the Metropolitan Library System after graduation. "I love my job as a children's librarian. This is a great place to work. I truly have never had a better job."
"I very much appreciate the generosity of The Choctaw Library Guild," Wood said. "They were always so kind and helpful when I worked at the Choctaw Library.
"Assisting students with their tuition in the form of this scholarship makes it easier to concentrate on the schoolwork rather than the school bills," continued Wood. "Working full time and going to school full time is not easy, and with this scholarship, the Choctaw Library Guild is helping me and any future recipients with the difficult task of getting a graduate degree in order to serve the Metropolitan Library System to the best of our abilities." The Metropolitan Library System of Oklahoma County includes 12 libraries and five extension libraries. Libraries include Belle Isle, Capitol Hill, Ralph Ellison, Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library and Southern Oaks in Oklahoma City, as well as Bethany, Choctaw, Del City, Edmond, Midwest City, Village and Warr Acres. Extensions are located in the communities of Harrah, Jones, Luther and Nicoma Park and include Wright Library in Oklahoma City . You can also reach us at www.metrolibrary.org.
