Soldier: the Life of Colin Powell

DeYoung, Karen (Knopf, c2006)
Shelf Number: 355.0092/P882d/BIOGRAPHY

Soldier is the first major biography of the former Secretary of State. Written by the winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the war on terror, the story is at its most interesting when describing Powell's confrontations with Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. Powell was Bush's only senior official who tried to slow the Iraqi invasion and the only one who did not condone abuses at Abu Ghraib and Guantnamo. Immediately shut out of policy decisions by those who spoiled for war with Iraq even before 9/11, prodded to resign during Bush's first term, and fired even though he was the most popular member of the Bush administration, Powell agonizes about his UN speech that misled the world about WMDs. Kirkus calls it "an excellent study in leadership-and the lack thereof."
