Location: Midwest City
All Ages
Sweet Biscuits is the story of the creation, development and evolution of black towns in Oklahoma. Today 13 black towns are still in existence though there were as many as 50 at one time. Ex-slaves of the Five Civilized Tribes (freedman), and States Negroes (ex-slaves from other states) populated these towns. They came by way of the Trail of Tears, on foot, horseback, wagon, train and waterways. Some came by choice and other by force. Regardless of how they came their strength and determination was clear. Sweet Biscuits will follow an African American ex-slave family from the cotton fields of North Carolina to the red dirt plains of Oklahoma. Who and what did they leave behind? Why did they choose Oklahoma? What did they bring with them? Was Oklahoma what they expected? What was daily life like for the early African-American settlers? Would they stay in Oklahoma? If they left Oklahoma; why? What is "happening" with these towns today and how do we remember those towns that no longer exist? What town was located five miles south of Vian and was once named Santown?

Yet, survey after survey shows that presentation skills are crucial to success in the work place. The person with strong communication skills has a clear advantage over tongue-tied colleagues – especially in a competitive job market. Many people pay thousands of dollars for seminars to gain the skill and confidence necessary to face an audience. But there’s another option that is less expensive and held in high regard in business circles – Toastmasters International. This organization has been around for nearly 80 years and offers a proven – and enjoyable! – way to practice and hone the communication and leadership skills of its members in a friendly and relaxed enviroment. Time: 2:00pm-3:00pm
Location: Edmond

If you are like most people, public speaking is not your favorite pastime. – way to practice and hone the communication and leadership skills of its members in a friendly and relaxed environment. To learn more or to register, contact Jackie Wright at (405) 808-6834 or Dan O'Neil at (405) 204-7154.

Sweet Biscuits: A History of Oklahoma Towns In Oklahoma
Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm
Location: Capitol Hill

Rilla Askew"s "Fire in Beulah" Book Talk
Time: 1:00pm-3:00pm
Location: Ralph Ellison
Adults
Rilla Askew's first novel, "The Mercy Seat", which was lauded as "powerful" and "arresting" by The New York Times Book Review and "an extraordinary story" by the Boston Globe proved that she was not afraid to tackle big, primal American themes. Her newest novel, "Fire in Beulah," set in the same heartland territory as "The Mercy Seat," is a chronicle of race, greed, and moral choice in the tense days of the Oklahoma oil rush. At its center is the complex relationship between Althea Whiteside-an oil wildcatter's high-strung wife who escaped from a hardscrabble childhood-and her enigmatic black maid, Graceful. Both are caught in the relentless currents of family and violence backdrop of fear, hate, and lynching that climax in the Tulsa race riot of 1921, during which whites burn the city's prosperous black section to the ground. The conflagration of the riot becomes the crucible that melds and tests each of the characters; their story is the American story of race, a tale that declares the simple truth that we are irrevocably tied to one another. Refreshments will be served.

If you are like most people, public speaking is not your favorite pastime. – way to practice and hone the communication and leadership skills of its members in a friendly and relaxed environment. To learn more or to register, contact Jackie Wright at (405) 808-6834 or Dan O'Neil at (405) 204-7154.

Sweet Biscuits: A History of Oklahoma's Black Towns
Time: 7:30pm-8:30pm
Location: Warr Acres
