    Growing up in a landlocked state, I never really worried about sharks…now, alligators are another story but that’s for another time, anyhoo for those of us who wonder what would really happen if a tornado was filled with deadly sharks (this is tornado alley after all!) and who find the deadly toothy grin of a great white fascinating…“SHARK WEEK” is upon us and we have to prepare!     Librarians are misunderstood creatures. We see ourselves as warriors: defenders of information, crusaders against censorship, guardians of knowledge! Most everyone else sees us as old maids who wear cardigans and shush people. When I first told people I was going to library school, I got scoffs and sneers, “What do they teach you, how to alphabetize?”

    On a recent out-of-town trip, I met a new friend who was completely befuddled by her mother’s addiction to romance paperbacks. “I just don’t get it,” she confided, “my mother is an educated woman! Why is she reading this trash?”

    Friends, it’s the month of love, and as your neighborhood librarian, I am telling you that romance novels are NOT trash.
