I recently read Amy Stewart’s The Drunken Botanist, and after reading her introduction, or aperitif as the author cleverly calls it, I immediately knew that her book would be the inspiration for this blog post. In The Drunken Botanist, Stewart notes that “every great drink starts with a plant” and provides the reader with great insight into the world of boozy botanicals.

Spring time is green time in Oklahoma. With the cooperative weather, we spend more time enjoying the great outdoors and relishing the vitamin D therapy (with sunscreen of course). Take your library with you on your walk in the park with digital audiobooks or MP3 downloads for free. When you stop by to visit us, take a look at our extensive collection of materials to inspire new ways for you to enjoy sunny and rainy days alike.

While we love to help you enjoy the basics like sunshine and flowers, we are also on the cutting edge of innovation and technology. This month we entice teens with Teen Tech Month activities. Teens can learn new ways to create, explore different technologies and be inspired by the possibilities.

And no spring magazine is complete without organic inspiration from the garden. Read about the history of one of Oklahoma City’s botanical jewels, the Will Rogers Garden. If that makes you want to practice your green thumb skills, read about the gardening resources we have for you. Our libraries can help you grow-in more ways than one!

The season for reflection and planning our gardens for the year ahead is upon us. While the colder months often have me longing for the divine warmth of spring and summer, there is much beauty to be found in the stillness, depth, and surprising colors of winter.  Whether admiring the crimson berries on my Yaupon Holly, watching brilliantly colored feathered friends feasting in my backyard, or yielding to the still of the dark night that soon greets me after work, I make it a priority to relish in the gifts of winter that Mother Nature so lovingly provides. Metro libraries have everything I need to plan this winter.

With the fall season upon us we can look forward to the display of brilliant colors the trees offer us and that bit of crispness in the air that awakens our senses. It’s also the perfect time to thank Mother Nature for her generous spirit. So let’s be thinking about those fall gardening activities that we can be doing that will reward us with dividends later on. Now’s the time for fall planting, preparing our garden beds for winter, and best of all, making delicious pantry goods to enjoy for the cold season ahead.
