Program Description

Event Description

Native peoples are a diverse population with distinct cultures that continue to grow and change in the United States.  While many focus on the past, it is important to recognize the important contributions of Indigenous peoples to our country today and listen to their voices.  This Contemporary Native Peoples kit introduces you to contemporary Native changemakers: Deb Haaland (United States Secretary of the Interior), Bethany Yellowtail (Fashion Designer), John Herrington (Astronaut), and Wes Studi (Actor).

You will also learn more about Native contributions to government, the English Language, agriculture, and food.  Misconceptions about Native peoples will also be introduced. You will be able to create a book about Native Peoples and select recommended activities to examine and share what you have learned about.  The online file contains links to videos and additional resources that you will need to complete the activity.  You can pick up a handout with the text and book format at the library during the pickup period.

This kit does not require a reservation and is available on a first come, first serve basis.  This resource is provided by IllumiNative and Amplifier.  Additional resources and activities are available at https://illuminatives.org/.
