Event Description

Spiritually Bold performs an original play about the life of Cathay Williams. At a time when there weren’t any opportunities for a woman who looked like Cathay, she demonstrated unshakable courage. Her desire was to simply live a better life.

She was born in Independence, Missouri, in 1844 to a slave mother and a free father. She enlisted in the United States Army on November 15, 1866 pretending to be a man. She is the only documented black woman to serve in the Army in the 19th century and the only known black female Buffalo Soldier.
