Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, but is not Mexico’s independence day as many people assume. In fact, it is not celebrated nationally in Mexico, but only in Puebla. As it is more popularly celebrated in the United States than in Mexico, it is a wonderful time to learn more about Mexican culture, history, and art.
One type of art, made by the Huichol or Wixárika - indigenous people living in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango - is yarn painting. This take home activity kit includes instructions and glue, yarn, and stencils to learn more about Huichol art and make a yarn painting of your own.
