Program Description

Event Description

Librarians Breanna and Chelsee walk you through fun STEM projects you can do at home - using items you may already have around the house.  Every Saturday this summer, enjoy a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program.  A listing supplies and steps will be available prior to the program so you can try this at home.

You can view STEM Saturday on Facebook, IGTV, and YouTube.

This weeks experiment is on Engineering.

Supplies:

  • Marshmallows
  • Toothpicks
  • Ruler/Measuring Tape
  • Timer

Tower Challenge

  • Rules: with only five minutes, build the strongest, tallest tower you can!
  • Experiment with different shapes in construction. Some shapes are stronger than others.
  • Test your tower's strength three different ways
    • Wind resistance - does your tower topple when a fan blows on it?
    • Earthquake proof - shake your table! Did your tower collapse?
    • Durability - toss a few cotton balls or ping pong balls at it; is your tower still in one piece?

We challenge you to build a taller tower than the ones we made!
