Description:

David William Gibbs (b Bristol, Mass. 1836 d Toledo, Ohio 1917) was a master architect who built public buildings throughout the Midwest, chiefly Ohio, crowning his career with the design of the Wyoming State Capitol in 1887. His Oklahoma City legacy, however, is having been chair of the commission charged by the Territorial Commission with officially creating Oklahoma City after Oklahoma Territory was formed in 1890 and for that he was often considered the first official mayor. He was chairman from July 15, 1890 - August 9, 1890. Gibbs died in 1917 and is buried in Toledo, Ohio at Woodlawn Cemetery.
