Belle Isle Closed for Renovations
The library known to many as the “Millennium Falcon” or the "Starship Enterprise” will soon undergo an extensive remodel, launching the 1960s style library into the future. The library will be closed to the public beginning Saturday, July 18, 2020 while they move into their temporary location, scheduled to open in August 2020.
About the Temporary Location
Because of the closing, library members should be aware of a few changes for dropping off and retrieving books that they have placed on hold. Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 5, library customers will need to return their checked out items, including interlibrary loan titles, to any of the other 18 Metro Libraries in Oklahoma County or visit the book drop at our temporary location at 3621 NW Expressway (between Gold’s Gym and Buy for Less) when it opens in August. Customers who place online holds will need to identify another location for pickup during the closed period. Customer holds for BI are being suspended until we reopen in the temporary location. You’ll keep your place in line and holds will begin being filled again when we reopen.
About the Renovation
ADG is the local architecture firm for the renovation.
The renovations will preserve the building’s iconic looks while still giving the library some much needed upgrades. The renovation will include adding over 10,000 square feet to the library to include:
- Larger meeting areas
- Additional study rooms
- Children’s programming room
- Larger teen space
- A makerspace
- New furniture
- More computers
- Additional parking
