Lost in the Digital Jungle? Use Library Resources to Get Organized!

By Zoe Elrod, Internal Communications Coordinator

The Metropolitan Library System (MLS) is more than just books—it’s a gateway to the past. Our Special Collections and Research Department is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing historical materials that document the history and culture of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, and the state. Their growing collection includes photographs, postcards, personal history interviews, maps, yearbooks and more, offering a glimpse into the past while ensuring these records are preserved for the future.

With over 150 unique collections, the Special Collections department provides a treasure trove of historical materials. MLS also offers extensive research tools to help explore county records, genealogy research guides and home history research. MLS’s expert archivists and librarians are available to assist anyone who is interested in uncovering forgotten stories. Visit metrolibrary.org/scr to browse digital collections, explore research tools and connect with staff.

The Special Collections and Research Department’s Oklahoma Room houses the Oklahoma Collection, an archive focused on the state’s rich history and cultural heritage. This collection includes books, periodicals and other works written by and about Oklahomans. The Oklahoma Room is available for browsing Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can explore materials anytime during these hours, though appointments are recommended for in-depth research assistance or access to specific materials.

If you’re interested in local history, genealogical research, or have historical materials to share, the Special Collections team is here to help. Contact them at Special.Collections@MetroLibrary.org or use the contact form on their webpage.

We invite you to explore MLS’s Special Collections, engage with local history, and enhance your research skills. Whether you're diving into archival materials, learning from MLS’s knowledgeable staff, or simply appreciating the value of well-preserved information, there’s something for everyone to discover.
