New eBooks from the Oklahoma Room

New eBooks from the Oklahoma Room

Metro Library's Special Collections presents two new eBooks from the shelves of the Oklahoma Room now available in the local interest area of Overdrive and Libby.

Tour on the Prairies cover

A Tour on the Prairies is an original classic in the lore of Oklahoma history. First published in 1835 this book briefly relates the story of a journey that Washington Irving made into the interior of the present state of Oklahoma, in the autumn of 1832 with a motley band of adventurers. Though known famously for his great American tales of the Headless Horseman and Rip van Winkle, Irving was an accomplished travel writer and this work is essential for its description of Oklahoma before it was Oklahoma. A must-read for anyone interested in Oklahoma history and culture.

Story of the 36th Cover

The Story of the 36th recounts the history of the 36th Infantry Division’s experiences in France during World War I. The basis of the book was a series of dispatches sent to the Daily Oklahoman newspaper in Oklahoma City by former reporter and Army Captain, Ben H. Chastaine. The book tells the story of the division, made up of men from Texas and Oklahoma National Guard units, from its formation at Camp Bowie, Texas, through training, and into combat in France. Chastaine proved to be an excellent officer and enjoyed a long military career into World War II.
