Program Description

Event Description

Come sit down with a scientist and learn about some of the current scientific research going on. We’ll have a presentation from someone in the scientific community followed by a discussion and Q&A. No Science background is needed or required to attend. Our presenter will Jordan Fuqua, Ph.D.

Jordan Fuqua is a scientist at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) in Oklahoma City and studies aging. His research focus is not aimed at helping people live longer, instead focuses on extending healthspan, which means we work on extending the period of life without diseases so we may live healthier longer. As we age, we lose skeletal muscle mass and strength, which leads to immobility, the onset of multiple age-related diseases, and early mortality. Jordan is researching how to preserve muscle by investigating what happens on a cellular level within aging muscle. His goal is to understand what changes in muscle as we age so we can develop therapies to help preserve healthy muscle and therefore extend the healthspan for aging individuals.

We’ll discus:

-The role and importance of skeletal muscle in overall health

-Best ways to preserve healthy muscle with advancing age

-What is happening to muscle on a cellular level as we age

-How this research could help individuals live longer healthier lives
