Event Description
Based on the real events of the discovery of the shipwrecked Steamboat Heroine in the Red River, participants will use STEAM to "solve the mystery" of what was suddenly discovered at the bottom of the river and what it tells us about Oklahoma history. Participants will learn how historians and archaeologists approach sites like crimes scenes (putting together small pieces of information to create a larger story), understand basic historical research and archaeological methods, get a deeper understanding of a lesser-known element of Oklahoma history (the river "highways" of the United States in the 1830s and 1840s), and understand how archaeology and history work hand-in-hand to understand the past.
