Event Description

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, so come hear a special speaker, librarian Phillip Tolbert talk about libraries. Phillip Tolbert will be speaker of the hour with a theme of “Advocates for Freedom: Access to Libraries and Information” with a main focus on Ruth Winifred Brown's role in the integrating of public libraries. Other Oklahoma libraries will be incorporated into the discussion as time allows. Ruth Brown was best known for being dismissed from her job at the library because of her involvement in civil rights activities and being accused of communism. Born July 26, 1891, In Hiawatha, Kansas, Brown died September 10, 1975 in Collinsville, Oklahoma. Ms. Brown was head librarian at Bartlesville Public Library until she was dismissed in 1950 after 30 years of exemplary service.

Open Mic Poetry Night. Are you an amateur, a seasoned poet, or somewhere in between and looking for someplace to express your talent? Local poets have an opportunity to read their own work or just sit and listen to the work of other budding poets. This is a recurring event and takes place on the last Monday of each month.
